Baccara – Yes Sir, I Can Boogie (1977) • TopPop

Rest in peace, María Mendiola.
María Mendiola, one of the two singers of the Spanish group Baccara, has died yesterday, Saturday September 11, 2021. The group had a huge hit in the 1970s with ‘Yes sir, I can boogie’. Baccara also represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1978.
María Mendiola was 69 years old.
Baccara is a female vocal duo formed in 1977 by Spanish artists Mayte Mateos (born 7 February 1951 in Logroño) and María Mendiola (born 4 April 1952 in Madrid, deceased September 11, 2021). Mayte is mostly dressed in black and Maria in white. Their music is a mix of pop and disco with a light Spanish accent.
Together they performed as flamenco dancers for tourists on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura. There they were discovered in 1976 by the German record executive of RCA-Records who offered them a contract.
The music they released was a mixture of pop music and disco with a touch of flamenco. Baccara sang songs in English, but with a Spanish accent (only Mendiola actually spoke English).

In 1977 they had a big hit with ‘Yes sir, I can boogie’, the single sold 18 million copies and Baccara became the first Spanish group in history to reach number 1 in the British charts and in many other countries in Europe. The successor ‘Sorry, I’m a lady’ also did well in the European charts.

Baccara’s hit ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’ from 1977 is a hit again this year 2021. The Scottish Soccer Team, playing in the Euro 2020 tournament, have adopted the song sung by Baccara in English with a heavy Spanish accent as Scotland’s national football team anthem.
The Baccara song is now affiliated with the Scotland football team and DJ George Bowie remixed the song and has teamed up with Bacarra to release a revamped version of the tune for the Euro 2020 tournament.
The band re-recorded their vocals for the special Scotland team tribute and Bowie supplied the soundtrack, which Bowie said was “the sort of things dreams are made of.”

This is the only original version of the song, recorded for Toppop exactly 44 years ago!
